Karina Ochoa

–

Gurnee, Illinois

Karina Ochoa, 45 years young, earned her angel wings on February 11, 2026.

Born on March 1, 1980, in Waukegan, Illinois, Karina resided there for most of her life and left an unforgettable mark on the community she loved so deeply.

Karina had a true zest for life and a magnetic, charismatic personality that could light up any room. She was vibrant, lively, and unapologetically herself — selfless, joyful, and a constant source of positivity to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her affectionate smile and unmistakable laugh radiated through every crowd. Wherever she went, she was the life of the party.

She loved staying active and embracing life to the fullest. Whether she was playing in volleyball leagues, walking along the beach at sunrise, or dancing the night away at Chicago’s cultural festivals, Karina moved through life with passion and energy. She not only loved to dance — she loved teaching others how to dance, bringing people together in laughter and rhythm.

Karina was as accomplished as she was spirited. A brilliant and dedicated student, she was a member of the Honor Society and went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, followed by a Master’s degree in Social Work. She proudly obtained her LCSW and devoted herself to helping others. During her undergraduate studies, she studied abroad and ultimately visited more than ten countries, embracing different cultures with curiosity and joy. Even during her illness, Karina continued striving toward her goals with unwavering determination.

Faith and community were cornerstones of her life. She was an active member of Holy Family Church and a dedicated participant in Mi Cristo Joven, a youth church group founded in Waukegan. She also proudly participated in the 1998 Miss Illinois beauty pageant and was involved in the Latino Club at the College of Lake County.

Above all, Karina cherished her family. She loved gathering for brunch, taking countless selfies — always making sure the angles were just right — and never settling for fewer than ten photos. She made herself available to friends and family no matter what she was facing. Even throughout her chemotherapy and treatments, she remained strong, positive, and full of grace. She was a true warrior who fought with incredible courage and strength. Karina’s gentle and loving spirit will forever be treasured.

She is survived by her dear parents, Jose and Maria de Los Angeles Ochoa; her beloved dog, Koby; her loving siblings Blanca Sepulveda, Yesenia Ochoa, Jose Luis Ochoa, Viviana Ochoa, Yazmin Ochoa, and Jonathan Ochoa; along with extended family and many lifelong friends.

She is preceded in death by her dog, Kandy.
